Parenting can be a difficult journey under any circumstances, but it’s especially challenging for those who provide full-time care to children with special needs. David’s Refuge reminds these parents of three things: you are not alone, what you do matters, and God and your community loves you.

A weekend respite with David’s Refuge includes two nights at one of our partner bed and breakfasts, meals and gifts, all provided free of charge thanks to the generosity of donors and volunteers.

David’s Refuge gives parents’ permission to take a moment to care for themselves, free from guilt. Hosts work alongside innkeepers during a David’s Refuge weekend to welcome and support a fully relaxed stay. They have first-hand experience with the demands of caregiving as well as an understanding of need for respite and self-care.

These volunteers put the caring into the weekend, facilitating meaningful connections and, most importantly, listen. These experiences have a profound and meaningful impact on parents, the way they see their life, and their ability to move forward from a place of strength. In 2018 Innkeepers David and Carolyn Hamer opened their hearts and their beautiful lodge to serve the David’s Refuge community with an annual fundraising event and four weekend respites each year for parents.

"The room was great. The facility was very nicely decorated and the food was to die for!"
